Candidate Presentation

We normally present a panel of three to five finalist candidates for each assignment.  For each candidate, we provide you with a resume plus comments from our meetings with the candidate.

John Dixon
Our View (excerpt)

John would be an excellent fit at our institution. He is a working person's person, while also being capable of executive leadership, as demonstrated both at Yale-New Haven  and [small town] Children’s Hospital.  He earned his MPH at Yale, but not until he was eight years beyond his BA. In the intervening years he was a Medical Services Corps (Dental) Officer in Vietnam, and subsequently a department head at Tufts New England Medical Center.

John is a dedicated gentleman, with an openness and trust (or is it love) of others which is unusual. And we believe that he has especially good range - ie. very good communication skills at all levels of an organization, but especially in the "bottom half." To be with him is to realize that he is a strong and natural operations person, but also that he is sophisticated and skillful at inter-institutional issues, product development, community relations, marketing, finance, etc.

He is particularly skilled at computer-based clinical management and reporting systems, and also at operations analysis.

His CV demonstrates his commitment to rehabilitation medicine.  His experience at Yale-New Haven, at Children’s Hospital, then back to work for his former boss at Y-NH in Bristol, and finally returning to Children’s Hospital, has been progressive and impressive.

His current situation is that Children's Hospital is moving to and becoming part of [Large City] Hospital. When that (already approved) transition is complete in four or five years, there wouldn't appear to be roles for both his CEO and for himself, so John has decided to consider other positions rather than wait some years to see. (Also, his CEO is someone who runs a rather ambiguous and bureaucratic shop.)

In our discussions with John, we have found him to be honest, direct, and able to see where he can make a judgment or decision, and where he needs additional information and analysis.  We further believe that he is sufficiently hard-headed and tough to survive in our businesslike environment.
